Navigate the Brightspace Learning Environment

Navigating D2L Brightspace efficiently is key to making the most of your online learning experience. This guide will help you understand the common elements of Brightspace and how to use them effectively.

Step 1: Access the My Home Page

  1. Log in to D2L Brightspace: Start by logging into your D2L Brightspace account using your username and password.
  2. Use the My Home Icon: The "My Home" icon is located at the top of the page. Click on this icon at any time to return to your organization’s homepage.

Step 2: Navigate to Your Courses

  1. Course Selector: Next to the My Home icon, you'll find the Course Selector. This drop-down menu allows you to access all the courses you’re enrolled in.
    • Open the Course Selector: Click on the Course Selector icon to view a list of your courses.
    • Select a Course: Click on the course name to navigate directly to that course’s homepage.

Step 3: Understand Alert Icons

  1. Message Alerts: This icon notifies you of any unread mail and instant messages.
  2. Subscription Alerts: This icon keeps you informed about new and updated announcements, grades, and upcoming due dates or end dates for your course activities or assessments.
  3. Update Alerts: This icon alerts you to new blog posts and discussion posts in forums, topics, and threads you’ve subscribed to.

Step 4: Use Your Personal Menu

  1. Open Your Personal Menu: Click on your name in the top right corner to open your personal menu.
  2. Edit User-Specific Settings: From the personal menu, you can access and edit settings related to your:
    • Profile
    • Notifications
    • Account Settings
  3. Change Language Preferences: You can also change your preferred language from this menu.
  4. Log Out: Use this menu to log out of Brightspace when you're done.

Step 5: Navigate the Navbar

  1. Explore the Navbar: The navbar, located at the top of the page, provides links to course-specific tools and resources.
    • Dynamic Layout: The style, layout, and available links in the navbar may vary depending on the course you’re viewing.
    • Course Tools: Common links include access to content, assignments, discussions, grades, and more.

Step 6: Utilize the Course Homepage

  1. Course Homepage Overview: Each course in Brightspace has its own homepage, which may look slightly different depending on how your instructor has set it up.
  2. Access Key Information: Typically, your course homepage will display important information such as:
    • Announcements: Updates from your instructor regarding the course.

Calendar Items: Important dates and deadlines for assignments, quizzes, and other course activities.
