When Indoors:

  • Close all windows, drapes, blinds, and shades.
  • Move away from the outside perimeter of the building and toward a safe area, such as an interior washroom, stairwell, basement, or any other interior room – avoid first floor lobby areas and any other areas with windows.
  • Do not attempt to leave the building.
  • Do not get in an elevator.
  • Remain calm and follow directions from Public Safety.

When Outside:

  • Stay away from trees, telephone or light poles.
  • Avoid downed electrical wires.
  • Do not stand in puddles of water.
  • City sirens will sound throughout the area.
  • Stay inside until danger has passed.
  • Seek shelter on the lowest building level, interior rooms, or hallways with interior walls.
  • Use interior spaces with short spans.  Stairwells, bathrooms, and closets are good spots.
  • Put as many walls as possible between you and the exterior of the building.
  • Avoid windows and doors with glass panels.
  • Avoid interior and exterior doors.
  • Avoid areas where chemicals are stored.  Chemicals and cleaning supplies should be removed from areas designated for shelter use.
  • Unsecured items (shelving, supplies, wall lockers, etc.) should either be secured or removed from shelter areas.
  • Stay away from entrances.  All doors around a shelter area should be closed and secured during a tornado warning.
  • Wait for the “all clear” by police or university officials.

Prepare

  • Make a plan with your family before hurricane season.
  • Know your flood risk, and learn how to fid a shelter and evacuation routes.
  • Gather supplies for a “Go-Kit” and a “Stay-at-Home-Kit.”
  • Follow instructions of local authorities and evacuate if told to do so.

During the Storm

  • Stay inside and away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.
  • Go to a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level of your home.
  • If you lose power, turn off major appliances to reduce damage.

After the Storm

  • Stay away from downed power lines and damaged buildings.
  • Assume all downed power lines are live.
  • If you smell gas, leave the area and call your local utility provider.
  • Don’t use a wet electrical device until an electrician has checked it.
  • Boil water for at least one minute before drinking or using it for food preparation.

Other Tips

  • Listen to local radio or TV for updates.
  • Be prepared to evacuate to a shelter or neighbor’s home if necessary.
