NLU launched Fireside Chats, a unique speaker series featuring relaxed, unscripted conversations between high-profile guests and student interviewers. Nearly 500 students attended and gained valuable insights on overcoming challenges to achieve success. The Fireside Chats included renowned figures such as Pete Kadens, Monique Rodriguez, Lori Lightfoot, Jahmal Cole, Dorri McWhorter, Crane Kenney, and more!
Several freshmen students enrolled in the Civics and American Government course led by Dr. Magda Giurcanu joined Lauren Schmidt from Civic Engagement and the Coalition for Transforming Higher Education for Advocacy Day in Springfield. NLU students met with state legislators to share their stories about challenges faced while pursuing their education and to advocate for increased investments in higher ed.

Dr. Magda Giurcanu and UGC Adjunct, Joe Rice led a series of six restorative justice workshops at BUILD, Inc., a community organization on Chicago’s West Side. Over six months, they worked with 28 youth, ages 14 to 22, on topics such as citizenship, voting rights, generational change, and trauma. This collaboration helped cultivate civic virtues and bridge community and university resources. At the conclusion, participants earned Civic Engagement Certificates.
The Mental Health Concentration is introduced and designed for students who wish to explore the psychological and emotional factors that impact mental health and well-being. Upon completion, students will be equipped for entry-level roles in mental health clinics, hospitals, and community organizations, as well as for advanced graduate studies in psychology or related fields. This concentration offers a solid foundation in psychology with a focus on mental health, preparing students for successful careers in the social and behavioral sciences.

In June, NLU’s Undergraduate Honors Program held its inaugural interdisciplinary global learning trip to Costa Rica, where students explored cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability.
The Undergraduate College also hosted three NASA TOPS workshops, led by Dr. Robyn Moncrief, to train students, faculty, and researchers in open science practices, with participants from local universities, MSIs, and the CDC.
We're proud to announce that UGC senior Mar Fasihi has been awarded the 2025 Paris Cafe Writing Scholarship, which includes a week of writing workshops and mentorship under former Chicago Tribune writer Patricia Tennison in Paris.
Our Pathways to Academics, Community, and Employment (PACE) students had an exciting opportunity to attend a Bulls game, where they were featured on the Jumbotron!

The Student Success Summit, designed for all first-year students, marks the official start of the academic year. This exciting two-day event helps students transition smoothly into college life by offering the opportunity to meet faculty, staff, and peers, begin coursework, set up necessary technology, and have some fun along the way. A total of 387 students participated in the summit, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 across both days.
The School of Nursing hosted the Dedication to the Profession Ceremony, where students were formally welcomed into the nursing profession. Surrounded by friends and family, students had their hands dedicated, symbolizing their commitment to providing compassionate care. The ceremony marked the beginning of their clinical education, highlighted by the donning of white lab coats and the lighting of candles, a tribute to the legacy of Florence Nightingale.
The Just Practice Annual Symposium, held at NLU's Wheeling campus, brought together over 125 students, practitioners, and community members. The event featured 17 expert-led sessions and a Resource Fair with 18 partners and employers. Organized by Co-Chairs Valerie Walker and Tracy Templin, the symposium provided CEUs through the WINGS Program and was funded by a Johns Hopkins University grant.
In collaboration with the Credit for Prior Learning department, the Human Services department hosted an event certifying 21 students in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). This program provides students with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and respond to mental health and substance use challenges in adults. Additional certification opportunities are being planned for interested students.
