Spotlight on iMentor Chicago: A Legacy of Impact and Mentorship

At National Louis University (NLU), we believe in showcasing powerful stories that inspire, empower, and create pathways to success. One such story belongs to iMentor Chicago, an organization dedicated to transforming educational opportunities for students, and Julia Bristow Briggs, a dedicated mentor and former Regional Advisory Board Member whose journey exemplifies the profound impact of mentorship.

iMentor Chicago: Creating Lasting Change

Since its establishment, iMentor Chicago has been a beacon for first-generation students, guiding them through the complex journey of high school and post-secondary education. By partnering with local schools, including North-Grand High School—the largest partner within Chicago Public Schools—iMentor provides resources, structured support, and one-on-one mentoring to help students achieve their educational and career aspirations.

The organization’s mission to bridge educational disparities aligns closely with NLU’s commitment to fostering opportunities for all learners, particularly those navigating the first-generation college experience. Through volunteer mentors who build personal, impactful relationships with students, iMentor empowers them to graduate high school and pursue higher education with confidence.

Julia Bristow Briggs: A Mentor Making a Difference

Julia Bristow Briggs’s involvement with iMentor Chicago began eight years ago when she sought a volunteer opportunity in education that combined tangible results with comprehensive support for volunteers and students alike. “Through my daughter at Salesforce, I found iMentor Chicago,” Julia shares. “Its focus on supporting all students, especially first-generation students, and its partnership with school counselors stood out. iMentor’s mission to help students graduate and achieve long-term success resonated with me.”

Fast forward to 2025, Julia is now mentoring her third student, Elizabeth Martinez. Their journey together began during Elizabeth’s junior year at North-Grand High School. “Elizabeth and I connected instantly, and I’ve had the privilege of supporting her through the challenging college application process,” Julia notes. With the support of iMentor’s comprehensive resources, Julia guided Elizabeth every step of the way, ensuring that she felt prepared and confident.

The Journey to NLU

Elizabeth Martinez’s story is one of determination, hope, and achievement. As the first in her family to graduate high school and attend college, her accomplishment marks a significant milestone. In October 2023, Julia and Elizabeth toured NLU and were both impressed by the university’s strong support system and dedication to student success. With Elizabeth’s aspiration of becoming an elementary school teacher, NLU proved to be the ideal match.

“Elizabeth recently completed her first term at NLU,” Julia shares proudly. “She attended orientation, made new friends, feels supported by her professors, embraced the demands of college and earned an Academic Excellence Award! I’ve coached her on speaking up in class, connecting with peers, meeting with professors, asking for help, and setting weekly goals. Watching her grow has been incredibly rewarding. Thank you, NLU, for making her feel at home.”

Celebrating Mentorship: iMentor’s Legacy of Mentorship Event

One of the highlights of iMentor Chicago’s commitment to community and student success is its annual Legacy of Mentorship Celebration, recently held at the Garfield Park Conservatory last fall. This event honors the incredible work of mentors and the achievements of students they support. It serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of mentorship and the collective efforts that drive change.
