Meet Duwuana E. Buice, a passionate early childhood educator whose journey at National Louis University is reshaping not only her own professional path but also the future of education in urban communities. Currently pursuing her M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction with an Advanced Specialization Option, Duwuana embodies the heart and purpose that drives transformative education.
As an early childhood educator working in Chicago's urban public schools, Duwuana sees firsthand the critical importance of strong curriculum design and effective teaching practices. Her choice to pursue the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Teacher Leadership wasn't just an academic decision—it was a calling.
"I am passionate about empowering students and educators," Duwuana explains. "This program equips me with the knowledge and tools to support young learners more effectively, especially in social-emotional development, literacy, and mathematics."
But her vision extends beyond the classroom. Duwuana is preparing to grow into a leadership role where she can mentor other educators, contribute to curriculum development, and advocate for high-quality, inclusive education. "Education should inspire, uplift, and reflect the students we serve," she says. "This program helps me work toward that vision."

When exploring graduate programs, Duwuana was drawn to NLU's commitment to community and real-world impact. "I saw how NLU intentionally supports educators passionate about leadership that makes a difference," she reflects.
The combination of program flexibility, faculty support, and a community of like-minded educators sealed her decision. "NLU doesn't just prepare you for the next step—it equips you to lead with purpose and heart."
Duwuana's relationship with Dr. Renee Gugel exemplifies NLU's approach to education. "She didn't just teach content—she created space for reflection, voice, and connection," Duwuana recalls. "She listened deeply, offered thoughtful feedback, and encouraged me to see myself as a scholar and a leader."
This meaningful interaction demonstrates what makes NLU special. "At NLU, education is personal, purposeful, and rooted in relationships—and that makes all the difference."
Balancing the demands of being a full-time teacher, graduate student, and leader hasn't been easy. "There were moments when the weight felt overwhelming," Duwuana admits. But her determination comes from a clear sense of purpose.
"I'm here for the children who need to see themselves reflected in their learning, and for the future educators I hope to inspire," she explains. "Every late night and early morning became a step toward something greater. I didn't give up—because the work is too important, and the impact is too real."
Duwuana's career aspirations are as inspiring as her journey. She dreams of becoming a leader who prepares the next generation of early childhood educators, particularly those serving urban communities. Her goals include teaching undergraduate students, writing children's books, and designing meaningful learning experiences that reflect the brilliance of diverse learners.
"A simple but powerful belief drives me: our children deserve the very best, and that starts with empowered, well-equipped educators."
When asked to describe National Louis University in one word, Duwuana chose "empowering." She points to a specific project—creating a comprehensive unit plan—as a turning point in her journey.
"That project wasn't just an assignment—it was a turning point. It helped me realize that I have the power to design learning that uplifts, includes, and transforms. NLU gave me the tools and the confidence to believe in that power."
Duwuana's message to prospective NLU students is clear and encouraging: "Go for it. This journey will stretch you, shape you, and strengthen the purpose behind your 'why.' You'll find a community that sees your potential, challenges you to grow, and supports you every step of the way."

Her advice is practical too: "Don't wait until you feel ready—start now, and let NLU help you become the educator and leader you're meant to be. Your voice, your story, and your dreams belong here."
As Duwuana reflects on her NLU experience, she's grateful for how the university has helped her find her voice as an educator, leader, creator, and advocate in early childhood education. "This journey has affirmed that my story, students' stories, and our communities matter," she says.
"I'm grateful to be part of a university that values those stories and equips us to turn them into impact. The work ahead is big, but thanks to NLU, I'm ready—and I'm not walking alone."
